Patient hoists and slings

A patient hoist lifts and moves a person who cannot take their own weight, using a sling and a lift arm instead of a carer's strength. At Allcare Warehouse, this range includes three Allegro hoists and the slings that go with them, for home and care facility use. A hoist should be chosen after an assessment by a clinician, such as an occupational therapist or physiotherapist, and used only by carers trained on it. Allcare does not provide assessments, but we can supply the equipment your clinician recommends. Call 1300 767 777 or visit our Liverpool showroom.

Mobile patient lifter options

A mobile patient lifter sits on a wheeled base and lifts the person in a sling. Both models below are described as tested to and complying with Australian Standard AS ISO 10535-2002.

Allegro Sonata Hoist

A compact mobile hoist designed mainly for home use or as a lightweight facility hoist. Its Space Link feature lets the person be rotated through 360 degrees at full lift height. The listed lifter weight is 41kg and the under bed clearance is 130mm.

Allegro Alto

A medium sized, heavy duty mobile hoist for facilities or home care where a higher capacity lift is needed. It also has Space Link and adds electric base width adjustment.

Standing hoist for sit-to-stand transfers

A standing hoist helps a person who can bear some weight move from sitting to standing, then transfer. The Allegro Salsa Hoist has multiple grip positions, an adjustable knee pad, electric leg spread, a removable footplate and a small footprint. It is also tested to AS ISO 10535-2002.

Choosing a hoist sling

A hoist sling has to match both the hoist and the person, so confirm the type and size with the clinician.

  • General Purpose Slings: polyester or mesh (the mesh suits bathing), with padding at pressure areas and colour coded loops for sizing. For people with some upper body control; yoke hoists only.
  • General Purpose Sling with Head Support: adds upper body and head support, and its description states it suits lifting from the floor and a less secure person.
  • Standing Transfer Sling: supports from waist to mid shoulder with the arms free, for weight bearing people on standing hoists only.

Before you buy a patient hoist

Safe Work Australia counts moving or holding a person as a hazardous manual task, which is why carer training matters as much as the equipment. Ask the clinician to confirm the hoist type, the sling type and size, the space around the bed and through doorways, and the floor surface. If you are using NDIS funding, the NDIS explains the role of assistive technology assessors. Our patient hoist for home use guide is a good next read.

Related equipment

For people who can help with the move, see Transfer Aids, and use slide sheets for turning and moving up the bed. Some of our care chairs are described as designed for use with transfer hoists, and if you are setting up a bedroom, see home care beds. Everything sits within our patient handling range, and you can see the hoists at our Liverpool showroom.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a patient hoist at home without training?
No. A hoist should only be used by carers trained on that hoist and sling, and the person should be assessed by a clinician first. Allcare does not provide assessments, so ask the person's occupational therapist or physiotherapist about assessment and training before the hoist is used.
What is the difference between a standing hoist and a mobile hoist?
A standing hoist, such as the Allegro Salsa, helps a person who can bear some weight rise from sitting to standing. A mobile hoist, such as the Allegro Sonata or Alto, lifts the person's full weight in a sling. The clinician decides which suits the person.
Can I buy a patient hoist with NDIS funding?
Whether a hoist is funded is decided by the NDIA and set out in your plan, so check that first. As a registered NDIS provider, we supply hoists and slings to self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed participants. Call 1300 767 777 when you are ready to order.
