Raised toilet seats

A raised toilet seat sits on your existing toilet bowl and lifts the seat height, so there is less distance to lower yourself down and stand back up. Allcare Warehouse lists three Care Quip seats in its toilet aids range, all moulded from plastic that resists stains and odours and all rated for users up to 190kg.

Three toilet seat raisers compared

  • Serenity Raised Toilet Seat: made in 50mm, 100mm and 150mm heights, each with or without a lid, with smooth edges, concealed fittings and a high gloss finish that make it easier to clean.
  • Savannah Raised Toilet Seat: a contoured seat with cutouts at the front and rear for personal cleaning.
  • Prima Raised Toilet Seat: a plainer seat with a single front cutout.

All three are held by a front location lip and two adjustable rear clamps or brackets, which Care Quip says makes them easy to fit and remove. The Savannah and Prima are made in England. A flexible splash guard, the P-Guard, attaches to the front of each seat and can be ordered with it.

Raised toilet seat with arms

None of these seats has armrests. For something to push up from, pair one with toilet safety arms or an over toilet aid from the toilet aids range, or a fixed toilet safety rail. Healthdirect notes that people can fall when hurrying to the toilet and suggests telling your doctor if getting there in time is hard. A bedside commode is another option.

Frequently asked questions

Which height should I choose?

The right height depends on your own height, your toilet and how far you can comfortably bend, so it differs from person to person. If a health professional is helping you, ask them to suggest one. The Serenity is listed in three heights; for the Savannah and Prima, the listings ask you to specify height and type when ordering.

Will a raised toilet seat fit my toilet?

The listings do not say which bowl shapes each seat fits. Before ordering, call 1300 767 777 or email [email protected] with the make of your toilet or a photo of the bowl, and the team can talk through the three options with you.

Is a raised toilet seat covered by the NDIS?

Toileting support items appear in the NDIS guidance on low-cost assistive technology, though that page does not name raised toilet seats specifically. What your plan covers is set by the NDIA, so confirm it with whoever manages your plan funds first.
