Self-propelled wheelchair or transit chair?

Healthdirect explains that a manual wheelchair can be wheeled by the user or pushed by someone else. A self-propelled wheelchair has large rear wheels with pushrims, so the user can move independently, and a carer can still push from the handles. A transit wheelchair has smaller rear wheels and is designed to be pushed by someone else. The Breezy Relax shows the difference: the self-propelled model has 24 inch rear wheels and the transit model has 16 inch wheels. Transit chairs in the range include the Breezy Basix Transit, Glide 1 Transit, Triton Transit and Vito Plus Transit, which adds attendant hand brakes for the carer.

One-handed propulsion

For someone who can use only one arm, the Glide One Arm Drive has dual pushrims on one side, and the Action 3 Lever Drive is moved with a push-forward, pull-back lever. Both come in left or right side drive.

Tilt in space wheelchair options

A tilt-in-space wheelchair tips the seat and backrest back together, keeping the angle between them the same. The Breezy Relax has gas-assisted tilt and recline, a padded headrest with side supports and elevating legrests, in self-propelled and transit versions. Chairs like this are usually chosen with an occupational therapist or physiotherapist, so bring their recommendation when you contact us.

Heavy duty and ward chairs

For larger users, the Glide 3 Heavy Duty, Rubix and Care Quip Heavy Duty have reinforced frames, and the maximum user weight is listed on most products. The Glide Ward chairs are made for hospital ward and institutional use, with non-folding stainless steel frames and swingback parts that stay attached. The full Glide Ward model includes an IV pole and an oxygen cylinder carrier; separate IV poles and stands are in our diagnostics range, and our page on facility equipment covers aged care and healthcare settings.

What to check before you buy

Seat width affects comfort and whether the chair fits through your doorways. Many chairs come in more than one seat width, so compare the overall width on each product with your narrowest door. If you are weighing up a powered option, our electric vs manual guide explains the difference, although our own range is manual only. Trays, legrests and bags are in mobility accessories, ramps have their own wheelchair ramps section, and seat cushions are under wheelchair cushions.

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell electric wheelchairs?
No. Every wheelchair in our range is a manual chair, either self-propelled or pushed by a carer. If you are looking for a mobility scooter, call 1300 767 777 to ask about one.
Which wheelchairs fold to fit in a car?
The Breezy Basix, Rubix and Concorde have folding frames with quick release rear wheels. The Vito Plus Transit has a folding frame and backrest, and the Neos has quick release wheels and a fold-down backrest. The Glide Ward chairs do not fold, as they are made for hospital and facility use.
Can NDIS funding be used for a manual wheelchair?
It depends on your plan. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) says mid-cost assistive technology needs a recommendation from an assistive technology advisor, such as an occupational therapist. Funding decisions are made by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), not by Allcare Warehouse.
How much weight can your wheelchairs take?
It varies by model, and the limit is listed on most products. In the current range it runs from 100 kg on chairs such as the Neos and Glide 1 up to 180 kg on the Glide 3 Heavy Duty.
