Medical thermometers for home and care

A reliable medical thermometer is one of the simplest health tools to keep at home, in a care bag or at a clinic. Allcare Warehouse stocks digital stick thermometers, ear thermometers and non-contact infrared models from Omron, Rossmax, Welcare and MY. The right medical thermometer depends on who you are measuring, how quickly you need a reading, and whether contact with the skin is a problem. The guide below explains each type, and you can call or visit our Liverpool showroom to compare them.

Types of thermometer we stock

Healthdirect lists digital, ear and infrared thermometers among the common types for home use, and notes that some suit particular age groups better than others.

Digital stick thermometers

The Welcare Digital Thermometer comes in Standard WDT404, Deluxe WDT505 and Ultimate WDT303 versions. Each is made for oral, underarm or rectal use, gives a reading in about 10 seconds, and has a fever alarm and last reading memory. The Deluxe and Ultimate have a flexible tip, and the Ultimate adds a backlit screen. Rossmax also offers two flexible tip digital thermometers.

Ear thermometer options

An ear thermometer measures inside the ear canal and gives a reading in about one second. We stock the Omron TH839S Ear Thermometer and two Rossmax infrared ear thermometers that come with probe covers. Healthdirect notes that an ear reading may not be accurate if the thermometer is not placed correctly, so follow the maker's instructions.

Infrared thermometer options

A non-contact infrared thermometer reads temperature from the forehead or temple without touching the skin, which helps when someone is asleep or unsettled. Options include the Omron MC720 Forehead Thermometer, the MY Infrared Forehead Thermometer, the Rossmax non-contact temple model, and the Rossmax telephoto model, which measures from within 10 cm and connects by Bluetooth. The MY Infrared Multi-Function thermometer reads from the ear or forehead in one device.

Choosing a medical thermometer

  • Speed: ear and infrared models read in seconds, while digital stick models take about 10 seconds.
  • Hygiene: non-contact models avoid skin contact, and the Rossmax ear models come with probe covers.
  • Display and memory: backlit screens help at night, and stored readings help you track changes.

Most models switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit and include a fever alarm. Whichever medical thermometer you choose, use the same method each time so readings are comparable.

Related equipment

You can find other medical and diagnostic devices in the main section, including blood pressure monitors and pulse oximeters. For first aid kits and dressings to keep alongside a thermometer, see first aid supplies. Our guide to diagnostic devices covers how these tools differ.

A thermometer tells you a temperature; it does not tell you why someone is unwell. If you are worried about a fever, contact your GP or call Healthdirect.

Frequently asked questions

Which thermometer suits a baby?
Healthdirect advises an underarm digital thermometer for babies younger than 3 months. It also says a baby under 3 months with a temperature above 38°C should be taken to the nearest hospital emergency department straight away, even without other symptoms.
Do ear thermometers need probe covers?
The Rossmax infrared ear thermometers in this range come with probe covers, which keep the probe clean between uses. One Rossmax model uses a multiple-use cover that its maker says to clean with alcohol after each use. Check the instructions for your model to see which covers it takes.
Can one thermometer be used for the whole family?
Yes, many households use one device for everyone. The MY Infrared Multi-Function thermometer reads from the ear or forehead, and the Omron TH839S is described by its maker as suitable for all ages. Clean the thermometer between people as the instructions describe.
