Dressing Aids

Dressing aids make getting ready easier when bending, reaching, gripping or using both hands is difficult. Allcare Warehouse stocks dressing aids for socks and stockings, buttons, shoes, hair care and moving a leg, so each step of dressing can be managed with less strain. They are often useful after hip or knee surgery, with arthritis, or when only one hand works well. Most are light, simple tools that need no setup, and the sections below explain what each one does.

Sock aid and stocking aid options

A sock aid holds a sock or stocking open on a gutter, so you can slide your foot in and pull it up with straps instead of bending down. The options differ in material and grip.

  • Soxon Stocking Aid: a flexible fabric gutter with large loop handles for a weak grip. It is machine washable.
  • Terry Towling Stocking Aid: a fabric gutter with a nylon lining to reduce friction and a core that bends around the heel.
  • Stocking Aid: a lightweight flexible plastic gutter with side notches that hold the sock.
  • Easy-On Stocking Aid Frame: a lightweight wire frame that sits on the floor while you slide your toes in.
  • Tights Aid: a double plastic gutter for pantyhose or tights.
  • Compression Stocking Aid: a plastic gutter with side grooves for compression stockings, sold in sizes.

Compression hosiery itself is in our compression socks range.

Button hook and dressing stick

The Kings Button Hook assists one-handed dressing. Its stainless steel wire loop passes through the buttonhole, grips the button and pulls it through with a slight twist. The Dressing Stick has an angled wire hook at one end and a rubber tip at the other, to help pull garments on or push them off without stretching.

Long handled shoe horn

A long handled shoe horn lets you guide your heel into a shoe while sitting upright. The Chromed Shoe Horn with Spring has a spring-mounted horn that flexes and a vinyl grip, and the Plastic Shoe Horn is a lighter option. Both have a hanging loop for storage.

Grooming and leg lifting

The Long Handled Brush, Long Handled Style Comb and Long Handled Fine Comb are designed for people who find it hard to raise an arm or reach behind the head. Each has an extension piece and a hinge to adjust the angle. The Leg Lifter is a webbing strap with a stiffened stem and loops for the hand and foot, used to move a leg that does not lift easily when dressing or transferring. Larger equipment for moving between bed and chair is in our transfer aids range.

Choosing the right dressing aids

If you are recovering from surgery or managing a long-term condition, an occupational therapist can suggest equipment for your situation. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a sock aid and a stocking aid?
They work the same way and the names are often used interchangeably. The main differences are the material and shape: fabric gutters are softer and machine washable, plastic gutters are firmer, and the Tights Aid has a double gutter for both legs. Compression stockings need the dedicated Compression Stocking Aid.
Can I use a button hook with one hand?
Yes. The Kings Button Hook is designed to assist one-handed dressing, and it has a contoured handle to hold. It works best on shirts and cardigans with buttons that are not too small, so it can help to practise on a garment laid flat first.
Which dressing aids are useful after a hip replacement?
Ask your surgeon or occupational therapist which movements to avoid and which equipment they recommend. If you have been told to limit bending, a sock aid, long handled shoe horn and reacher are designed for that. Call 1300 767 777 to check what we have in stock.
