Cast protectors for the shower

A cast protector for the shower is a waterproof sleeve that slips over a plaster cast, bandage or dressing on an arm or leg, with a seal at the top to keep water out while you wash. Allcare Warehouse stocks two ranges in adult and child sizes: MY waterproof cast and bandage protectors and a standard cast protector range. Both are reusable and intended for one person only. Follow the bathing advice of the doctor or nurse who applied your cast, then choose the size below.

MY protector or standard protector?

The MY range has a soft, watertight seal, is latex free and is made to guard against splashes and sprays when bathing or showering. Its listings name general wounds, burns, cuts, grazes and sutures as well as casts. The maker advises against fully submerging the soft seal cuff, as water may leak in.

The standard range uses a diaphragm seal at the opening. You slip the protector over the cast or dressing before bathing or showering, and the diaphragm seals the water out.

Showering with a cast protector

A cast can make standing in the shower awkward, and Healthdirect notes that fractures are usually treated with a cast. A few simple aids make showering with one easier:

  • Sit down to wash: a shower stool or shower chair takes the weight off a leg in plaster and lets you keep an arm out of the spray.
  • Use a hand shower: a clamp-on hand shower or long handled sponge from Bathroom Accessories lets you aim water away from the cast.
  • Check afterwards: remove the protector and check the cast. If it does get wet, follow the instructions your treating team gave you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I swim in a cast protector?
A cast protector is made for bathing and showering, not swimming. The MY range advises against fully submerging the soft seal cuff because water may leak in. Ask your treating doctor or nurse before taking a cast anywhere near deep water.
Can a cast protector be shared?
No. Both ranges are reusable, but each maker recommends a protector for a single patient only. If more than one person in the household needs one, buy a separate protector in the right size for each.
Do these protectors work over bandages and dressings?
Yes. Both ranges are described for bandages and dressings as well as plaster casts. Ask your nurse or doctor how a wound or dressing should be cared for while it heals, including whether it needs to stay completely dry.
