Shower chairs & bath seats

A shower chair gives you a stable seat with a backrest, so you can wash sitting down if standing tires you or your balance is unsteady. Allcare Warehouse stocks height adjustable chairs on steel, aluminium and stainless steel frames, along with a folding chair, wide and extra wide models and swivel bath seats for showering over a bath. Most have arms to help you sit down and stand up. Each listing shows the width between the arms, the seat height range and the maximum user weight, so you can compare models before you visit.

Choosing a shower chair with arms

Arms give you something firm to push against as you sit and rise, and most chairs here have them. Several models use ergonomic angled arms designed to assist transfers. The Rebotec Cannes has removable clip-in arm rests, and the Nizza has adaptable arm and back supports. One standard chair is designed for unrestricted side access, for people who move sideways onto the seat.

Widths and weight capacity

  • Standard chairs: the steel and stainless steel chairs measure 460mm and 450mm between the arms and are rated to 125kg.
  • Aluminium chair: a 460mm seat on a lightweight, rust proof frame, rated to 200kg and tested to Australian Standard AS/NZS 3973.
  • Wide chair: 500mm between the arms, rated to 135kg.
  • Extra wide chair: a reinforced frame, padded seat and curved backrest, rated to 300kg. Specify the size when you order.
  • Swivel shower chair: 480mm between the arms and rated to 160kg, with a seat that locks in both the transfer and showering positions.
  • Folding chair: 430mm between the arms, rated to 100kg, and folds for travel or storage.

Swivel bath seat options

If you shower over a bath, a swivel bath seat sits across it. You sit down from outside, turn into the bath, and the seat locks in both the transfer and bathing positions. The Swan and Care Quip seats adjust in width to suit most baths. The Myco and Swan have a 410mm seat rated to 100kg, and the Care Quip has a 450mm seat rated to 125kg. Our Swan tub chair article covers the Swan in detail.

Shower chair, stool or commode?

A chair suits people who want back support while they wash. Shower stools have a smaller footprint, with most bases 380mm deep compared with about 560mm for a standard chair, so they fit tighter showers. Commode chairs add a toileting opening and often wheels, so one chair can be used over the toilet and in the shower. Our seating comparison guide covers each in more detail.

Two Aspire commode seats are also listed here: a moulded soft seat for Aspire and most other shower commodes, and a handmade pressure reducing seat.

Buying with NDIS funding

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) names a shower chair as an example of assistive technology that might help reduce your risk of falling in the shower. Funding depends on what is reasonable and necessary for your plan, and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) decides. Allcare Warehouse is a registered NDIS provider and supplies participants with self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed plans. Frequently asked questions

What should I look for in a shower chair for elderly parents?
Check the seat height range, the width between the arms, the maximum user weight and whether the shower floor is flat. Arms and a backrest suit most older users. If a physiotherapist or occupational therapist is involved in their care, ask them to confirm the choice before you buy.
Will a shower chair fit in my shower?
Measure the shower floor and the doorway. The standard chairs here have bases about 560mm wide and deep, while the folding chair is 550mm wide and 470mm deep. If space is tight, a shower stool or a wall-mounted drop down shower seat may suit better.
Can I see a shower chair before I buy?
Yes. You can visit our Liverpool showroom inside Northumberland Arcade, 230 Northumberland Street, and see chairs from the range in person. Call 1300 767 777 before you come to check that the model you want is on display.
