Types of incontinence products

Our incontinence products are grouped by how each is worn. Adult Continence is split into four types:

  • Pads and liners: worn inside your own close-fitting underwear, from thin liners to large shaped pads. Browse incontinence pads.
  • Pull-up pants: look and feel like ordinary underwear and pull on and off the same way. Browse incontinence pants.
  • All-in-one briefs: wrap around the body and fasten with re-sealable tabs, so they can be fitted while lying down. Browse all-in-one briefs.
  • Products for men: guards, shields, pouches and men's underwear. Browse male continence products.

Outside the adult range, bed and chair protection covers bed pads, chair pads and mattress covers. Kids and youth continence holds iD Comfy Junior pants and slips and the Kylie Kids washable bed protector.

Absorbency guide

Absorbency is how much fluid a product is made to hold. Many listings show it in millilitres or as a level. As a rough guide:

  • A few drops: liners and light pads, such as iD Light Ultra Mini at 110ml or iD Light Mini at 170ml.
  • Moderate leaks: longer pads and pull-up pants, such as iD Pants Soft Feel Normal at 1050ml.
  • Heavy leaks: high capacity pants and shaped pads, such as iD Classic Pants Maxi at over 2200ml.
  • Very heavy or overnight: all-in-one briefs, such as Lille Suprem Fit Maxi Extra Large at 4060ml.

Men's products often use levels: iD For Men runs from Level 1 to Level 3, and TENA Men from Level 1 to Level 4. Continence Health Australia notes that overnight pads hold more, and that the right product depends on the type of incontinence, physical ability and lifestyle. Our guide to the best overnight pads covers night-time choices.

NDIS continence products and other funding

If your incontinence is directly related to your disability, Continence Health Australia says continence products may be funded through the NDIS, and an assessment by a nurse continence specialist forms part of the evidence. Whether your plan includes NDIS continence products, and how much, is decided by the NDIA and your plan, never by Allcare. Read more on our NDIS page.

Separately, the federal Continence Aids Payment Scheme (CAPS) helps eligible people aged 5 or older with permanent and severe incontinence meet some of the cost of continence aids from the supplier they choose.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose pads, pull-up pants or all-in-one briefs?

It depends on how much leakage there is and whether the wearer can stand to change. Pads suit lighter leaks, pull-up pants suit people who are active and change themselves, and all-in-ones are often chosen when someone is changed lying down. Our guide to pads, pull-ups and all-in-ones compares the three.

Who can help me work out which incontinence products I need?

A nurse continence specialist can assess your needs and suggest suitable products. The National Continence Helpline on 1800 33 00 66, run by Continence Health Australia, can put you in touch with a continence service near you. We can then help you find those products.

Are there products for bowel leakage?

Yes. Several products are described by their makers as suitable for faecal incontinence as well as urine, including MoliCare Premium Slip and MoliCare Premium Elastic all-in-ones and Dailee Pants Super Performance. Check each listing, or call us to compare them.
