Anti-Ligature Furniture

Anti-ligature furniture is designed for high-risk care settings such as mental health units, where rooms need fewer points a cord or fabric could be tied to. Allcare Warehouse supplies an anti-ligature furniture range that includes beds, desks, a stool, a night stand, a dresser, wall storage and a wall shelf. Most pieces are moulded in one piece of polyethylene, without seams, gaps or added parts. Furniture is one part of a room's design, and each facility should assess its own rooms and risks.

How the range is made

The manufacturer describes the moulded pieces as ligature resistant and lists these features:

  • one-piece moulded polyethylene, made without seams, gaps or added components that could hide contraband or absorb fluids
  • non-porous, pick and puncture resistant, and sealed
  • cleanable with commercial detergents, steam or bleach-based agents, with colour that runs right through the material
  • fire retardant and self-extinguishing
  • MAS Certified Green

Most pieces come in a range of colours, which can match a room or colour code different uses.

Anti-ligature bed options

Anti-Ligature Static Bed

The Static Bed is a moulded bed platform designed for high-risk and care facilities. It has moulded deck risers to prevent fluid pooling and allow airflow, a recessed toe kick, tapered side rails for getting in and out, and an optional concealed, tamper-proof floor anchoring kit. Pair it with a suitable mattress from our mattresses and overlays range.

Anti-Ligature Care Bed

The Care Bed is an adjustable bed developed with the psychiatric sector. Its electrical cords, lifting mechanism and mechanical parts are hidden, and only staff can raise the bed or engage the wheels. It runs on a rechargeable battery kept in a locked drawer at the foot of the bed that opens with a chip or keycard, and the charger sits in a separate room. A staff remote shows the battery level, and a patient remote is also supplied.

Anti-ligature desk, seating and storage

  • Anti-Ligature Writing Desk: a freestanding desk for projects, craft and writing.
  • Anti-Ligature Wall Mounted Desk: a wall-fixed desk for study and activities, designed to pair with the stool.
  • Anti-Ligature Stool: a moulded seat for use with either desk.
  • Anti-Ligature Night Stand: a bedside cabinet.
  • Anti-Ligature Dresser: a floor-based dresser with open shelves.
  • Anti-Ligature Wall Storage and Wall Shelf: for linen and personal belongings, kept within reach and visible to staff.

Planning a room

The National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Comprehensive Care Standard sets out how health services identify and respond to patients at risk of harm, and furniture choices sit within that wider approach. Our facility equipment page covers other equipment for clinics and care homes, including medication and procedure carts. Frequently asked questions

Does anti-ligature furniture make a room safe?
No single piece of anti-ligature furniture can do that. The manufacturer describes this range as ligature resistant, but a room's safety depends on its fixtures, fittings, supervision and the care plan as a whole. Each facility should assess its own rooms and choose furniture as part of that process.
Can the Anti-Ligature Static Bed be fixed to the floor?
Yes, an optional floor anchoring kit is available. The maker describes it as concealed and tamper-proof. Ask us about the kit when you order, and check fixing requirements with your facility's maintenance team or builder.
How is anti-ligature furniture cleaned?
The maker states the moulded pieces can be cleaned with commercial detergents, steam or bleach-based agents. The colour runs right through the material, which the maker says allows for frequent, thorough cleaning. Follow your facility's infection control procedures for products and frequency.
