Manual wheelchairs

A manual wheelchair has no motor or battery: it is wheeled by the person sitting in it or pushed by a carer. Allcare Warehouse lists 21 Care Quip models in its wheelchairs range, from lightweight folding chairs to heavy duty, tilt-in-space and hospital ward models. Most listings give seat sizes and a maximum user weight, so you can shortlist before you call 1300 767 777 or visit the Liverpool showroom.

Self propelled wheelchairs

With a self propelled wheelchair, the user turns the pushrims on the big rear wheels to get about independently. Folding options include:

  • Glide 1 Wheelchair: a stainless steel folding frame made in Australia and tested to Australian Standard AS/NZS 3695:2009, in 400, 430 and 460mm seat widths.
  • Triton Wheelchair: a folding steel frame with padded nylon upholstery, rated to 120kg.
  • Concorde Wheelchair: an aluminium frame with a folding backrest, adjustable seat height and anti tip bars.
  • Breezy Basix Wheelchair: push handles, seat depth, seat height and footplate angle all adjust, and one version has a rear amputee axle setting.

Lightweight folding wheelchairs

For a lightweight folding wheelchair, compare the net weight on each listing. The Neos Wheelchair weighs 7.9kg and the Breezy Basix 8.3kg, both on aluminium frames with quick release rear wheels. The Neos also has desk armrests, which let you pull in close to a table.

Transit wheelchairs for carers

Transit wheelchairs are made to be pushed by someone else. The range covers the Glide 1 Transit, the Triton Transit and the Breezy Basix Transit, plus the 10.3kg Vito Plus Transit, whose attendant hand brakes give the carer more control and whose backrest and frame both fold.

One arm drive, heavy duty and tilt-in-space models

  • One arm drive: the Glide One Arm Drive puts dual pushrims on a single wheel side, while the Action 3 Lever Drive moves with a push-forward, pull-back lever and a gear lever for reverse. Each is made in left side and right side versions.
  • Heavy duty: the Glide 3 Heavy Duty takes users up to 180kg and the Rubix up to 170kg, and the Care Quip Heavy Duty Wheelchair has a strengthened steel frame.
  • Tilt-in-space: the Breezy Relax tilts from minus 2° to 20° and reclines to 40°, with a padded headrest and elevating legrests. It comes as a self propelled chair with drum or standard brakes, or as a transit chair.
  • Ward and amputee: the Glide Ward and Glide Ward Basic have non-folding stainless steel frames for hospital wards, and the Glide Ward adds an oxygen cylinder carrier and an IV pole. The Glide Amputee has a rear amputee axle setting.

Measuring and add-ons

How well a chair fits comes down mostly to seat width and depth; our article on measuring for a wheelchair walks through taking both. If you are weighing up a motor, our article on electric versus manual chairs compares the two, though Allcare Warehouse stocks manual chairs only. Add-ons are in mobility accessories, and wheelchair ramps are listed separately.

Frequently asked questions

Who can help me choose a manual wheelchair?

According to Healthdirect, mobility aids can be prescribed by a range of health professionals, among them GPs, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, who assess you and then help with the choice. Assessments are not part of what Allcare Warehouse offers, so have your measurements or written recommendation ready when you call or visit.

Do these wheelchairs have solid or air-filled tyres?

Many listings name solid tyres, including the Triton, Concorde, Neos, Rubix, Vito Plus and Breezy Relax, and the Glide Ward models have maintenance-free solid tyres. Listings that do not mention tyres may differ, so ask before ordering if puncture-free tyres matter to you.

Can a manual wheelchair be secured in a vehicle?

Several listings mention tie down points, including the Action 3, Rubix and Breezy Basix models, and the Action 3 also has a car buckle seat belt. Whether a chair suits travelling while seated in it depends on more than tie down points, so check with your transport provider. For air travel, see our guide to flying with a wheelchair.
