Choosing the right stage

Pregnancy, Birth and Baby explains that in Australia, stage 1 or starter formula suits babies up to 6 months, while stage 2 or follow-on formula is for babies from 6 to 12 months and often has more iron. Moving to stage 2 is optional, as you can stay on the infant formula your baby already has. Karicare numbers its tins the same way, then adds stage 3 toddler milk drinks from 12 months and stage 4 from 2 years.

Milk types in the range

  • Karicare: stage 1 in sachets, stages 2 and 3 in tins and sachets, and Karicare 4 Toddler Milk Drink from 2 years.
  • Karicare Gold+: stages 1, 2 and 3, plus Gold+ 4 Junior Milk Drink from 2 years.
  • Karicare Gold Plus+ Organic: stages 1 to 3, made with organic New Zealand milk from certified organic and grass fed farms.
  • Karicare A2 Protein Milk: stages 1 to 3, from cows that produce only A2 type beta casein protein.
  • Goat milk and sheep milk: stages 1 to 3 of each.
  • Karicare Soy: one formula, from birth to 12 months.

For a healthy baby born full term who is not breastfeeding, Pregnancy, Birth and Baby says to offer a cow's milk-based formula before trying any other type. The same page advises against soy-based formula unless your doctor has recommended it. Karicare Soy is described as suitable from birth for infants who need an alternative to cows' milk formula.

Toddler and junior milk drinks

Karicare presents its stage 3 and 4 drinks as a supplement to a toddler's diet when food intake may not be enough. Pregnancy, Birth and Baby notes that healthy children over 12 months do not need formula and should be eating a variety of solid foods, so talk to your child's doctor if you are unsure whether your toddler needs one.

Sachets for feeding away from home

Three Karicare sachet packs are listed: stage 1 in a 5 pack, and stages 2 and 3 in 4 packs. When you go out, Pregnancy, Birth and Baby recommends carrying cooled boiled water and formula powder separately and mixing them just before the feed. The Philips Avent Milk Powder Dispenser, which holds three pre-measured feeds, and the Avent Thermabag are in our baby care range, with bottles and teats.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make up a bottle of formula?

Pregnancy, Birth and Baby says to follow the instructions on the container. Boil fresh tap water and let it cool, pour the right amount into a sterilised bottle, then add loose, level scoops using only the scoop from that tin. Shake until dissolved and test the temperature on your wrist before feeding.

How much formula does my baby need?

It varies from baby to baby, so watch for hunger and fullness cues. Pregnancy, Birth and Baby lists the best signs of enough milk as 6 or more wet nappies a day, steady weight gain and a happy, active baby. A child health nurse can guide you on amounts for your baby's age and weight.

Is a more expensive formula better for my baby?

Not necessarily. Pregnancy, Birth and Baby says price is not a sign of quality and that all approved infant formulas in Australia contain the nutrients a baby needs. Choose the right stage for your baby's age at a price you can afford, as that guide also suggests avoiding frequent brand changes.
