Forearm and underarm crutches
Forearm crutches, also called elbow crutches, have a cuff that sits around the forearm and a handle you grip, so the crutch stays with you if you let go to open a door. Underarm crutches have a padded top that sits against the side of the chest, below the armpit. Allcare Warehouse stocks both styles from Rebotec, Coopers and Care Quip, including heavy duty, tall, collapsible and children's models. The guide below covers the main differences and what to check before you buy.

Elbow crutches: cuffs and handles
The cuff and handle decide how a crutch feels over a long day. An open cuff is easy to slip in and out of, while a cuff with a hinge moves with the arm, as on the Rebotec Safe-In-Soft. The Rebotec ECO 120 has a non-twisting cuff and a large solid ferrule (the rubber foot at the base). The Coopers Cumfy handle is contoured to spread pressure across the palm. The Rebotec Yano adds a wide velcro forearm support and adjustable handle angle, and its maker designed it for people with rheumatism and arthritis. The Rebotec New Walk has an internal spring with two damper settings to soften each step.
Heavy duty, tall and travel forearm crutches
- Heavy duty: the Rebotec BIG 250 is rated to 250 kg, and the Coopers Permanent User Cumfy is rated to 190 kg for heavier or long-term users.
- Tall: the Rebotec Safe-In-Excess Length has an extra 10 cm of tube, and the Coopers Permanent User can be cut down to size.
- Travel: the Rebotec Travel crutches come apart, with the longest piece just 44 cm, and pack into a drawstring bag.
- Extra stability: the Rebotec Quadro has four rubber feet for a wider footprint.
Underarm crutches
Underarm crutches in the range are the Rebotec Quick´N Easy, sold as a pair in sizes from child to tall adult, and the Care Quip Underarm Crutches with a padded top, padded handgrip and rubber tip. Both adjust in height and are rated to 130 kg. Padded tops, sheepskin covers and replacement tips are in mobility accessories.
Kids crutches
Our range has three Rebotec children's models: the Fun-Kids with an open cuff and bright colours, the Safe-In-Kids with a hinged cuff for active kids, and the Quadro Fun-Kids with four feet for extra stability. Each adjusts in height as a child grows.
Getting the fit right
Healthdirect stresses using the right aid for your condition and having it fitted safely, so ask your physiotherapist or hospital team to set the height before you go home. Our list of hospital discharge equipment covers other items for recovering at home. If you cannot put weight on a foot or ankle, the knee walker in rollators and walking frames is another option to discuss. For lighter support, see our walking sticks, or browse all walking aids.
