Mattress overlays

Mattress overlays are layers that sit on, or under, an existing mattress to change how it feels and supports the person lying on it. This part of our bedding and sheet sets range has three Icare overlays, each given a risk category and a feel rating by the maker.

Soft pressure care overlays

Icare places both soft overlays in its high risk category. The ActiveX Overlay is made from an elastic foam that softens as it warms, so it gives around pressure points. Icare suggests it for added comfort during short-term illness or recovery from surgery. It suits users from 30kg to 215kg and is 50mm deep.

The ActiveFloat Overlay adds SlideSkin, a second membrane that lets the cover slide with the user's movements, and Icare describes it as reducing shear in every direction. It can be used on some alternating air mattresses.

Firm support overlay

The XP Support Firm Overlay is rated low risk with a firm feel, for users from 50kg to 250kg. Icare lists three uses: as an underlay to stop a mattress bottoming out, to make an existing mattress firmer for moving and transfers, and as a crash mat beside the bed. Placed under an alternating air mattress on a profiling bed, it keeps the person off the bed's bars or mesh if the air mattress loses pressure when the bed is adjusted.

More pressure care surfaces

Healthdirect lists a special cushion or mattress among the treatments for pressure ulcers. Full replacement surfaces are in pressure mattresses and overlays, and our guide to pressure injury prevention covers other equipment. For cooling, the ThermoPad Bed overlay is in our HydroSense range.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need to change position on an overlay?

Yes. Healthdirect advises that you move or change position in your bed or chair often to prevent pressure sores, asking a carer for help if needed, and suggests checking the skin twice a day for early changes. An overlay adds to that routine rather than replacing it.

How do I keep an overlay clean?

Fit it with a Zerotec cover: Icare makes one sized for 5cm overlays, in a PVC that can be wiped down between uses, which is useful wherever infection control is a concern. It is listed in our mattress protection range.

Who should advise on the right overlay?

The risk category Icare gives each overlay is a starting point, not a recommendation for a particular person. If someone has a pressure sore or is at risk of one, ask their doctor or community nurse what surface they need. Allcare Warehouse has no clinicians on staff, so bring that advice with you when you call 1300 767 777.
