HydroSense temperature system

HydroSense is an Icare system that changes the temperature of water in a control unit and sends it through a pad, wrap or vest connected to it. The range sits in our bedding and sheet sets section, alongside two Icare ThermoPad cooling products. Call 1300 767 777 or visit the Liverpool showroom to work out which parts you need.

How the HydroSense system works

Everything runs from the HydroSense System Unit, which Icare describes as whisper quiet. The control unit sets the water temperature, and the water then flows through whichever accessory is attached. Icare notes that the system performs best in a temperature controlled room. Each accessory connects to the unit by hose, so plan where the unit will sit beside the bed or chair.

Pads for the bed

  • HydroSense Mattress Pad: 90 x 190cm for one person, the main all-night element, made for use over long periods.
  • HydroSense Medium Pad: a 40 x 60cm multi-use PVC pad for larger areas such as the back and torso.

Icare asks that the mattress pad be taken off the bed and aired at least every two weeks, hand washed as needed, and emptied and cleaned before it is stored. The user manual shipped with the goods explains the steps.

Wraps, vest and cuff for one area

For heat or cooling on one part of the body, there are four accessories:

  • HydroSense Lumbar Strap, for the lower back
  • HydroSense Head and Limb Wrap, with an adjustable strap
  • HydroSense Back and Shoulder Vest
  • HydroSense Foot and Leg Cuff, which closes with hook and loop and fits most teenagers and adults

Each can run on its own or alongside the mattress pad.

Hoses and splitters

The HydroSense Dual Function Splitter lets two accessories work from one unit. The HydroSense Extender Hose adds 1200mm of length to an accessory's connection, which helps when the unit cannot sit right next to the person using it.

ThermoPad gel cooling

The ThermoPad listings describe cooling only and do not mention a unit or power supply, while HydroSense offers heat or cooling at a temperature you set. That difference is the main thing to weigh between the two.

The two ThermoPad products are made of gel-infused ActiveX foam with an embedded cooling gel pad. The ThermoPad Bed is a 90 x 190cm overlay with a Bluetec cover woven with a cooling yarn, for an existing mattress or a profiling bed. The ThermoPad Seat is a 45 x 45cm cushion for wheelchairs, recliner lift chairs and other seats. More bed toppers sit in our overlays range, and seat cushions in cushions.

Frequently asked questions

Which HydroSense parts do I need to get started?

At least the HydroSense System Unit and one accessory, because Icare sells the pads and accessories separately from the unit. Pick the accessory by where the heat or cooling is needed: a pad for the bed, or a wrap, strap, vest or cuff for one area. To run two accessories at once, add the Dual Function Splitter. If you are unsure, call 1300 767 777 and describe how it will be used.

Does HydroSense heat as well as cool?

Yes. The lumbar strap, head and limb wrap and back and shoulder vest are each listed for heat or cooling. Icare recommends keeping the unit between 20°C and 35°C, and notes that staying within that range helps reduce condensation on the pads.

Is it safe to have water and power in the bed?

Icare states that with the Medium Pad, no electricity goes past the control unit; only water reaches the pad. Icare also advises switching the unit on only while it is in use. Follow the user manual that comes with the system for set-up, cleaning and storage.
