Incontinence pads and liners

Incontinence pads and liners sit inside your own close-fitting underwear and draw urine away from the skin, whether it is a few drops when you laugh or sneeze or heavier leaks day and night. Allcare Warehouse stocks pads from TENA, Poise, Always Discreet, Depend, MoliCare, iD, Lille Suprem and Ontex, from slim liners to large shaped pads. Many show their capacity in millilitres, so you can compare like with like. Call 1300 767 777 or visit the Liverpool showroom for help choosing.

Bladder leakage pads versus period pads

Continence Health Australia explains that continence pads are designed for thin, fast-flowing urine and absorb much more fluid than period pads, and that using period pads for bladder leaks can lead to leaks, odour and skin irritation. Bladder leakage pads also help reduce odour and pull wetness away from the skin.

Choosing incontinence pads by absorbency

  • Liners: the thinnest incontinence pads, for drips and light leaks, such as Poise Liners, the TENA Micro Liner and iD Light Ultra Mini at 110ml.
  • Light to moderate pads: such as iD Light Normal at 295ml, Lille Suprem Light Normal at 370ml, Always Discreet Normal and Poise Pads Regular.
  • Heavier pads: such as TENA Pads Super, which the maker describes as extra long for moderate to heavy leaks, Depend Anatomic Pads, and Lille Suprem Light Maxi at 1030ml.
  • Shaped pads: large anatomical pads such as iD Form, Lille Suprem Form and MoliCare Premium Form, with iD Form Maxi rated at 3500ml. The maker recommends wearing iD Form with iD net pants to hold it in place.

Overnight incontinence pads

Continence Health Australia notes that overnight pads are more absorbent than daytime pads. TENA Pads Maxi Night is described by the maker as its most absorbent pad, extra long and wider at the front and back. Among overnight incontinence pads, Poise Pads Overnight hold up to 2 cups of liquid, according to the maker, and Always Discreet Maxi Night is also made for night use. Our guide to the best overnight pads compares night-time options in more detail.

Pads for women and pads for men

Most pads here are shaped for women, including Poise, Always Discreet, Lights by TENA, iD Light, Lille Suprem Light and the MoliCare Premium lady pad. For sensitive skin, there are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic options, such as Poise Ultra Long Liners Fragrance Free and the iD Expert Light range. Guards and shields made with a cup shape for men are in male continence products.

When a pad is not enough

If pads fill quickly or leak, incontinence pants or all-in-one briefs hold more, and the Adult Continence page shows every type. Leaks that change or get worse are worth checking. Our article on types of urinary incontinence covers common causes, and a GP or nurse continence specialist can help work out what is behind the leaks.

Frequently asked questions

Do incontinence pads need special underwear?

No, they are worn inside your own underwear, but Continence Health Australia says disposable pads are best worn with firm-fitting underwear so they stay in place. Shaped pads such as iD Form are designed to be held in place with net pants.

Are there pads without added fragrance?

Yes. Poise Ultra Long Liners Fragrance Free and the No Dyes and Fragrances pads are both listed, and iD Expert Light pads are described as hypoallergenic. If skin becomes red or sore, Continence Health Australia advises talking to a doctor.

Can NDIS funding be used for incontinence pads?

Where incontinence is directly related to a disability, Continence Health Australia says pads and other continence products may be funded through the NDIS. The NDIA and your plan decide what is funded. Our NDIS page explains the steps.
