Back brace options

The M-Brace LSO Back Brace and M-Brace LUMBLOCK Lumbar Sacral Back are firmer braces that tighten with crossing bands to limit movement of the lower back. The Thermal Lumbo Sacral Belt includes four rigid splints and four flexible side stays with a double layer closure. The DonJoy Performance Bionic Back Wrap and the Activease thermal back supports are lighter wraps. Have back pain assessed by a GP or physiotherapist before choosing a brace, and see Healthdirect's page on back pain for when to see a doctor.

Lumbar support belt choices

A lumbar support belt wraps around the lower back and abdomen. The Advantage Industrial Schiek Support Belt is a rigid, non-stretch belt that its description says is designed for repetitive lifting, bending and pulling, and the Scipro Sport/Work Belt with Extensor Pad and Scipro Nitro Weightlifting Belt suit work and gym use. For everyday wear, the Sacro Cynch Elastic Back Support, Deluxe Fit Sacro Cynch Belt and McDavid Sacro Cynch Elastic Back give elastic compression, and the Back Support with Shoulder Straps adds detachable straps.

Sacroiliac belt and pelvic support

A sacroiliac belt sits lower, around the hips, to support the pelvis. The Bodyassist Pelvic Ring and Sacroiliac Joint Binder uses side-to-side pressure to stabilise the pelvic ring, according to its description, with wide side panels and non slip fabric. The BA Power Pull Sacral Back Belt is another option for this area.

Maternity and post-surgical support

The Elastic Maternity Support Belt has an abdominal lift panel and expands to fit as pregnancy progresses. The Post Surgical Abdominal Wrap is a lightweight, vented elastic binder described for use after childbirth or surgery, in small to large waist sizes. The Abdominal/Surgical Support and Abdominal Belt are also here. Ask your midwife, GP or surgeon whether a support is right for you and when to start wearing it.

Posture corrector and seating support

The Lower Back Support with Posture Correction combines a lower back belt with shoulder straps that draw the upper back into position, so it works as a posture corrector and back support in one. More posture braces are under shoulder and arm supports. For sitting, the Obus Forme Back Support is a rigid framed back rest that straps to a chair, and the Lumbar Roll, D Shape Lumbar Roll Cushion and Comfort Lumbar Roll attach to most chairs with an elastic strap. See pillows and cushions for more seating support and massage for back massagers. To try sizes, visit the Liverpool showroom.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure for a back brace?
Many back and abdominal supports are sized by waist measurement. The Post Surgical Abdominal Wrap, for example, runs from small at 75 to 85 cm up to large at 95 to 105 cm. Check the size chart on each product page, or call 1300 767 777 to check before you buy.
Can I wear a lumbar support belt at work?
Some belts, such as the Advantage Industrial Schiek Support Belt and Scipro Sport/Work Belt, are designed for work and lifting. A belt does not replace safe lifting and manual handling practice, so follow your workplace procedures and see a health professional if you have back pain.
Can I use NDIS funding for a back brace?
It depends on your plan. Funding for a back brace is decided by the NDIA, not by Allcare, so check with your plan manager or support coordinator first. Participants with self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed plans can then call 1300 767 777 to talk about ordering.
