Bedside aids, urinal bottles and bed pans

A urinal bottle or bed pan lets someone go to the toilet without getting out of bed, which helps at night, after surgery or when walking to the bathroom is hard. Allcare Warehouse's Bedside Aids, Urinals & Bed Pans range also covers the aids that make getting in and out of bed easier, such as bed raisers, bed sticks and support rails. Most of these work with an ordinary bed. This page explains what each one does so you can choose for the person and the room.

Male urinal bottles

Most male urinals in the range hold 1 litre, have an integrated handle and are marked in 100ml graduations, which makes the amount easy to read.

  • Male Urinal: a basic moulded bottle that can be autoclaved for sanitising
  • Male Urinal with Lid: a clip-on lid that stays attached while in use
  • Male Urinal with Screw on Lid: a screw lid to prevent spills
  • Male Urinal Spil-Pruf: a patented non-spill spout that stops spills in any position, holding 500ml without spilling

Female urinal options

A female urinal is a different shape from a male one, made for women to use in bed or a chair. The range includes the Female Urinal, which can be autoclaved, the lighter Female Urinal Cygnet, and a female adaptor that converts the Spil-Pruf urinal for female use. A urinal bottle holder clips to the bed frame or rail and keeps any of these upright.

Bed pan

A bed pan is used lying down or sitting in bed. The Slipper Bed Pan has a wedge shape that slides under the person more easily than a round pan, a front panel that stops spills while it is carried away, and an integrated handle. It can be autoclaved for sanitising.

Bed raisers

Bed raisers lift an ordinary bed so it is easier to sit on the edge and stand up.

  • Blox Bed Raisers: English hardwood, 140mm high, sold as a set of four
  • Blox Chair Raisers: 75mm high, with three recess widths for different leg shapes
  • Elephant Feet: plastic raisers with a dished recess and non-slip insert, sold single or as a set
  • Care Quip Raisers: 40mm plastic raisers that stack for more height

Getting in and out of bed

Several aids here slide between the mattress and base of an ordinary bed, including the Bed Stick Cobra, the Bed Rail Hook Type, removable and dropside bed rails, and the Smart Rail, which swings out to give support when standing. An overbed frame, a rope ladder and the Bed Sitta backrest help with sitting up.

Protection in bed

A crash mat beside the bed, rail bumpers, side rail wedges, the Ultra Safe Cocoon and rail protectors help protect people who move a lot in bed. A blanket support and Curera support wedges are here too.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean a urinal bottle?
Follow the cleaning instructions that come with it. The Male Urinal, Spil-Pruf urinal, screw-lid urinal, Female Urinal and Slipper Bed Pan can all be autoclaved for sanitising, which suits facilities. The Spil-Pruf spout unscrews for emptying and cleaning.
How much do bed raisers lift a bed?
It depends on the raiser, and the heights are listed above. Check that the bed's legs fit the recess before you buy.
Do I need a urinal or a commode?
A urinal or bed pan is used in bed. A bedside commode is a chair with a toilet seat and bowl, for someone who can get out of bed and sit but cannot easily reach the bathroom. A GP or occupational therapist can advise which suits.
