Commodes and commode chairs

A commode chair is a seat with a toileting opening and a removable bowl or pan, for people who cannot easily reach or use a standard toilet. Allcare Warehouse stocks bedside commodes for the bedroom, shower commodes that roll over the toilet and into the shower, and tilt in space models for people who need more support while seated. The range includes Rebotec, Juvo and Aspire chairs, from a folding frame to bariatric and children's models. Each listing gives the seat width or width between the arms.

Bedside commode chairs

A bedside commode stands beside the bed so the toilet is close at night. Most come with a toilet seat, a lid and a removable bowl. Options include the basketweave model with a timber frame (rated to 150kg), deluxe padded models with a vanity skirt that hides the bowl, a lightweight folding aluminium frame (90kg) and the Rebotec Koln (130kg). The 2 in 1 model works as a bedside commode or over the toilet. Urinals and bed pans are in bedside aids, and frames for use over a standard toilet are in over toilet aids.

Mobile shower commode chairs

A mobile shower commode is on castors, so one chair can be wheeled over the toilet and into the shower.

Attendant-pushed models

The Rebotec Berlin, Bonn and Hamburg have swing-away armrests, adjustable footrests and 125mm castors with brakes. The Rebotec Konstanz has a cushioned PU seat, and the economy model has an anodised aluminium frame rated to 100kg. Juvo chairs with swing-away legrests or a sliding footplate have swing-back arms for side transfers.

Self-propelled models

Juvo self-propelled shower commodes have 22 inch rear wheels so the user can move the chair on their own, and the Rebotec Genf is also self-propelled. The Rebotec Venedig has a narrower 42cm seat for smaller adults and teens.

Tilt in space commode chairs

On a tilt in space chair, the seat and backrest tilt back together as one unit while the person stays seated. The Rebotec Phoenix has tilt in space, swing-away arm and foot supports and a cushioned headrest. The Phoenix Multi tilts from 90 to 130 degrees and adds a pneumatic or electric lift, and its listing describes a hoist transfer position for use with patient hoists. Juvo also makes standard and wide tilt in space models. Ask the person's occupational therapist or health professional to help choose a model and its settings.

Choosing by seat width

Measure the user's hips while seated, and the doorways the chair must pass through.

  • Juvo widths: the self-propelled, swing-away legrest and sliding footplate models each come in 460, 510, 560, 610 and 660mm seat widths.
  • Wide and bariatric models: the Rebotec Denver and Dallas have 68cm and 74cm between the arms, and the Rebotec Boston has a 52cm seat rated to 150kg.
  • Smaller users: the Rebotec Augsburg is built for children, the Augsburg 24 is a self-propelled child version, and the Bremen suits small adults.

Frequently asked questions

Can a shower commode go over my toilet?
Most mobile shower commodes here are designed to be positioned over a standard toilet. Check the seat height on the listing against your toilet height, and measure the space around the toilet, including any wall, cistern or vanity the frame must clear. The Aspire platform commode lists a toilet bowl clearance of 465mm.
Do commode chairs come with a bowl and seat?
Many include a bowl or pail, but check each listing. The Aspire 460mm weight bearing platform shower commode is sold without a seat, and some Juvo listings show padded commode seats as an additional item. Spare bowls and pan carriers are sold separately.
Can the NDIS fund a commode chair?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funds assistive technology that is reasonable and necessary for your plan, and higher-risk items need advice from an assistive technology advisor or assessor. The NDIA makes the decision. Allcare Warehouse is a registered NDIS provider, and commodes can be ordered on self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed plans.
