Thickened drinks and texture-modified foods

Thickened drinks are made for people with swallowing difficulties, known as dysphagia, who have been advised to drink fluids at a set thickness. Allcare Warehouse stocks ready-to-drink thickened drinks from Flavour Creations in juices, cordials, coffee, chocolate and high-protein flavours, along with Instant Thick powder and pureed desserts. Thickened drinks and texture-modified foods should be used as directed by a speech pathologist, dietitian or doctor, who will tell you which level is right. This page explains the levels and products we carry.

IDDSI levels on our thickened drinks

The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework uses numbered levels to describe drink thickness and food texture. IDDSI states that drinks are measured from Levels 0 to 4 and foods from Levels 3 to 7, and that the clinician is responsible for recommending a level. The drinks in this category are labelled at three levels:

  • Level 2, Mildly Thick: cranberry, raspberry cordial, Pro Lemon Lime, Pro Caramel, Creamy Chocolate and Creamy Dairy drinks.
  • Level 3, Moderately Thick: Sun Juice, pear juice, raspberry and citrus cordials, white coffee, Pro Lemon Lime, Pro Caramel and Creamy Chocolate drinks.
  • Level 4, Extremely Thick: thickened water, pear juice, raspberry and citrus cordials, Pro Lemon Lime, Pro Caramel and Creamy Chocolate drinks.

Always match the level number on the pack to the level on your swallowing plan.

IDDSI thickened water

If you have been advised to drink IDDSI thickened water, Flavour Creations Thickened Water is a ready-to-drink Level 4 water in a 175 mL cup, sold in cartons of 24. Like most thickened drinks in this range, it comes in Flavour Creations' Dysphagia Cup, which has a sloped rim, an easy-peel lid and textured sides for easier gripping.

Flavoured and high-protein drinks

Juice options include Sun Juice and pear juice. Cordials come in raspberry and citrus, and the maker lists cranberry as made with real cranberry juice. The Pro Lemon Lime and Pro Caramel drinks each contain 15 g of protein per cup, and the Creamy Chocolate drink lists protein, calcium and vitamin D.

Food thickener and pureed food

Flavour Creations Instant Thick is a food thickener powder you add to hot or cold foods and drinks to reach the consistency you have been advised. The instant THICK sachets are pre-measured single serves for Level 3, Moderately Thick, which the maker suggests for outings and for infection control in care settings.

For pureed food, the chocolate and banana custards and the Fruits with Attitude purees in banana and mango or apple and apricot are each labelled as IDDSI Level 4 Pureed.

How do I know which IDDSI level I need?
Your speech pathologist, dietitian or doctor decides the level after assessing your swallowing. Allcare Warehouse cannot recommend a level. Once you know your level, check that the level number in the product name matches it before you order.
How long do thickened drinks keep once opened?
Flavour Creations says to cover an opened cup, store it in the fridge, and discard any unused drink after 24 hours. Unopened cups can be stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Check the pack for each product's storage directions.
Are these drinks suitable for special diets?
Many are. Product pages list diet information such as gluten free, lactose free, halal or kosher certification, and allergens like milk. Diet details vary by flavour, so read the label for each drink before ordering, especially for allergies.
