Pressure relieving mattresses and overlays

A pressure relieving mattress spreads a person's weight more evenly than an ordinary mattress, so less of it rests on bony areas such as the shoulders, heels and tailbone. Allcare Warehouse stocks foam, air and gel options for home and facility beds, from Icare medical mattresses to CuroCell alternating air systems and overlays that sit on a mattress you already have. Which type suits depends on the person's pressure injury risk, how long they spend in bed and the bed it goes on. This page explains the main types so you can compare them.

Foam medical mattresses

A medical mattress is a pressure relieving mattress built for long hours in bed and for profiling beds that bend at the head and knees. Icare rates its mattresses by risk category, from low to very high risk, based on measured peak pressure, therapist recommendation and the Waterlow scale, a pressure injury risk score used by health professionals.

  • Icare ActiveX IC15, IC20, IC25 and IC30: heat and pressure sensitive foam in firm, medium and soft feels, with a gel-infused cooling version
  • Icare M1 to M4 medical mattresses: medium to very high risk ratings, with the M1 suited to bariatric users up to 300kg
  • Latex mattresses: a low risk option with bounce-back support that helps with transfers
  • Eurocare T2, T3, T3 Concave and T8, and the Optimal 5zon and 5zon Plus: static foam mattresses with profiled or zoned surfaces

Alternating and static air mattresses

An alternating air mattress has a pump that inflates and deflates rows of cells in turn, so pressure keeps shifting. A static air mattress holds an even air pressure set to the user's weight. Air systems come either as a full mattress replacement or as an overlay on the existing mattress.

  • Alternating: CuroCell A4 CX10, CX16, CX20 and OP10, CuroCell Uno and Cirrus, Harvest Hampton and Kensington, Eurocare Dynamic Plus, Rossmax and Icare VersaFlo
  • Static air: SAM PRO CF10 and CF16, the ROHO Mattress System and the non-powered CuroCell Area Zone

Mattress overlay options

A mattress overlay sits on top of an existing mattress to add comfort or pressure relief without replacing the whole bed surface. Air overlays include the Sofflex and Prodigy, and gel options include the Action Overlay polymer pad.

Foam overlay choices

A foam overlay is the simplest way to soften or support an existing mattress. The range covers the Icare ActiveX, ActiveFloat and XP Support Firm overlays, Icare memory foam overlays, SAF gel-permeated foam overlays, a convoluted foam overlay and a silicone fibre overlay.

Pressure care across the bedroom

Changing position often and using a special mattress or cushion are among the ways pressure ulcers are prevented and treated, according to Healthdirect. A mattress is one part of that. For seating, see our wheelchair cushions, and for heels and elbows, our heel protectors. The wider pressure care range and the rest of our bedroom aids sit alongside this page. Wipeable Zerotec covers are in our bedding range, and our mattress guide covers choosing for people with disability.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an alternating air mattress or will foam do?
It depends on the person's pressure injury risk and how much time they spend in bed. Each product page gives the maker's risk rating or intended use. A GP, nurse or occupational therapist can assess the person's risk and recommend the right type.
What is the difference between a mattress replacement system and an overlay?
A replacement system takes the place of the existing mattress on the bed base. An overlay sits on top of the mattress you already have. Overlays are lighter and simpler, while replacement systems give the full depth of support surface.
Will a pressure relieving mattress work on a profiling bed?
Many are made for it. Icare foam mattresses use a base designed to contour with any profiling bed, and the Eurocare Dynamic Plus foam is profile cut to suit adjustable beds. Check the product page for the sizes and bed types each mattress suits.
