Grab rails

Grab rails give you a firm handhold where the bathroom is most slippery: beside the toilet, inside the shower and at the edge of the bath. Allcare Warehouse stocks wall-fixed grab rails in marine grade stainless steel, drop down rails that swing back against the wall, and a clamp-on rail that fits most baths. Most of the fixed rails are made in Australia, and their listings note that they must be installed by a qualified tradesperson. Choose by where the rail will go, then by its shape and length.

Why grab rails matter in a wet room

Healthdirect lists installing handrails or a seat in the shower or bath among the ways to reduce slips in wet areas at home. A rail is only as good as its position, so plan where hands naturally reach as you sit, stand and step.

Toilet grab rail options

The toilet rails are 32mm marine grade stainless steel with a brushed satin finish and concealed flanges that cover the fixing points. Several share the name Toilet Rail and differ by shape and dimensions, so compare the drawing and measurements on each listing. Some include a rear section; for these you specify dimension B to suit your cistern, and the listings note that a rear rail can obstruct the seat or cistern. Many come in a mirror-image version for the opposite wall, and one has an additional leg for greater support. Freestanding options that need no wall fixing are in over toilet aids.

Shower grab rail and bath rail options

The Bath/Shower Rail listings use the same 32mm stainless steel and concealed flanges, again in several shapes listed under one name. Straight rails come in 25mm polished stainless steel or 32mm brushed satin, both suitable for wet and dry areas, and the 32mm rail is available in custom lengths. For baths, the clamp-on rail screws onto the side of most baths, offers two grip heights and is suitable for downward pressure only. If you are seated over the bath, pair a rail with a bath transfer bench.

Drop down rail options

A drop down rail mounts on the wall and swings up out of the way when not in use, which helps where space is limited. The powder coated steel rail is 760mm long with a 25mm tube and a spring-loaded lock. The stainless steel rail is 840mm long with a 32mm tube, locks automatically when upright and is made in Australia.

Length, diameter and position

Rail lengths and dimensions are listed on each product, so specify the size you need when you order. The 32mm rails also take the clamp-on hand shower holder in Bathroom Accessories. If a health professional is assessing the bathroom, ask them to mark the heights and positions before the tradesperson fits anything. Our guide to accessible bathroom design and our article on home modifications under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) cover the bigger picture. Frequently asked questions

Can I fit a grab rail myself?
The wall-fixed rails and drop down rails on this page must be installed by a qualified tradesperson, as each listing states. The clamp-on bath rail is different: it screws onto the side of most baths, but it is only suitable for downward pressure.
What diameter grab rail should I choose?
Most rails here are 32mm in diameter, which also suits the clamp-on hand shower holder and the toilet roll holder. There is also a 25mm polished stainless steel rail and the 25mm powder coated drop down rail. Ask to see both at our Liverpool showroom to feel which suits your grip.
Why are several products called Toilet Rail or Bath/Shower Rail?
They are different shapes and sizes within the same 32mm stainless steel range. Open each listing to compare its drawing and dimensions, or call 1300 767 777 with your measurements and we can help you narrow it down.
